On this day of filming, Mrs. Fair was returning from a lengthy maternity leave. She was so excited to see her students and they were excited to see her too! Mrs. Fair wanted this first day back with her students to be one of fun, relationship building and a review of skills. Enjoy! Watch how she greets her students and begins her lesson. Reflect on what you have observed. 2. Do you hear how Mrs. Fair engages her students by asking them to listen for new words? As you watch Mrs. Fair work with the students, listen and observe how she builds relationships through her respectful tone and kindness. This is critical when working with students. Reflect. 3. As Mrs. Fair teaches new vocabulary, she is helping students make connections between language arts concepts and skills and a music class. Listen how she also references meta-cognition - teaching students to think about their thinking. What does this mean and why is it important? 4. Another important thing to notice is how Mrs. Fair corrects students when they make a mistake, forget something, or get off task. She continues to be very respectful and positive as she relates to the students. Reflect on this as you watch the lesson. 5. Mrs. Fair uses various strategies to keep students engaged. She has asked students to help her add body movements to the game, she has whispered so they have to listen carefully, and she has told students things like 'now we are going to make it harder' as a way to challenge them. Using hand movements to show the musical scale helped students who are kinesthetic learners. Some students learn better when they use their body in some way to learn or review concepts. In addition to helping the kinesthetic learners, Mrs. Fair also continued to hold the attention of all students by using the hand movements.
