Mars exploration has been key to human search for alternative planet that can support life and solve some of the problems the earth continues to experience today. Scientists continue to build spaceships and robots to explore Mars to determine its capacity to support human life. They hope that their efforts, resources, and inventions would be sufficient to assess whether this planet can support life. Although some of human problems such as congestion and global warming could be solved after people successfully land on Mars, conflict between world superpowers could also arise.

Congestion problem on earth could be addressed if humans successfully land on Mars. The United Nations Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UN DESA) reports that currently the world population is at 7.3 billion people (2015). However, this figure is not going down as it is expected to grow tremendously in the coming years. For instance, UN DESA (2015) predicts that by 2050 the world population would be 9.7 billion people. In light of this projection, successful landing on Mars could be a perfect opportunity to address human population problems. A significant number of the global population would be shipped to Mars to ease the congestion on earth. Consequently, issues such as proper housing would be addressed because overpopulation is one of the major causes of poor housing.

Additionally, if people successfully land on Mars, minimizing industrial emissions that are the major causes would reduce global warming. Industrialization is one of the main causes of this problem considering that industries and industrial products such as vehicles emit a considerable amount of greenhouse gases (Singer & Avery, 2007). However, if humans successfully land on Mars, the number of world industries could be reduced because industrial production could be transferred to this planet. In turn, greenhouse gases emission would be cut because a significant number of industries would not be operating on earth. Global warming is a major world concern considering its adverse effects such as melting of glaciers, increased desertification, and climate change (Singer & Avery, 2007). For that reason, successful landing on Mars would be a huge step towards addressing global warming.

Despite the possible benefits, which humans and the earth would enjoy after successfully landing on Mars, this step could be problematic to humanity because conflict could arise among superpowers competing for resources or superiority. The world has already experienced two devastating world wars mainly because of competition for superiority and control of resources (Liebau, 2010). Similarly, successfully landing on Mars could be a trigger for conflicts among superpowers because they might want to control its resources. Failure to reach an agreement between world superpowers could cause another world war with countries aligning with their preferred allies.

Humans could benefit immensely after people successfully land on Mars because this step could solve world congestion and global warming problems. World overpopulation could be addressed by shipping a large number of people to this new destination. Similarly, global warming would be reduced by cutting the number of industries on earth and moving industrial production to Mars. Even though this step could be beneficial, it could be devastating to humanity if superpowers compete for resources or superiority. Therefore, it is vital that humans focus on amicable ways to share resources to avoid a repeat of the previous world wars. Such progress would ensure that humanity prospers in its endeavors.
