What is a Literary Essay?

A literary essay is a piece of writing that analyzes a text. It can be either fiction or nonfiction. Generally, literary essays are written about books, but they can also be written about short stories, poems, plays, or any other type of literature. The main goal of a literary essay is to analyze and interpret a text in order to uncover certain hidden meanings.

Elements of a Literary Essay

The main elements of a literary essay are:

  1. Thesis Statement
  2. Body Paragraphs
  3. Conclusion
  4. Works Cited Page

Thesis Statement

The thesis statement is the most important part of your literary essay. It is the main argument that you will be making throughout your paper. Your thesis statement should be clear and concise so that your readers know exactly what you are trying to argue.

Body Paragraphs

Your body paragraphs should each focus on one particular aspect of your thesis statement. In other words, you should have one essay body paragraph for each point that you are trying to make. Each body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that introduces the main point of the paragraph. The rest of the paragraph should then be used to support and develop that point further. Be sure to use evidence from the text to support your claims!

Conclusion

Your conclusion should restate your thesis statement and sum up the main points that you made in your body paragraphs. You might also want to include a call-to-action or some sort of warning in your conclusion. For example, if you are writing about the dangers of climate change, you might conclude by urging your readers to take action to help mitigate its effects.

Works Cited Page

Be sure to include a Works Cited page at the end of your academic essay. This page should list all of the sources that you used in your paper. For each source, you will need to include basic bibliographic information, such as the author, title, and publication date. You will also need to include a brief summary of each source. Check with your teacher, essay writer, or professor to see what citation style they prefer (e.g., MLA, APA, Chicago).
