Math 211 Student Survey Questions Note: Many of these questions ask you to work with a categorical variable from the Math 211 Student Survey data set. Most variables in that data set are presented as numerical, but remember that you can re-express any numerical variable as a categorical variable by splitting the numerical scale. For example, you could take average hours of sleep, a numerical variable, and create a new categorical variable that answers the question “do you average 8 or more hours of sleep?” (‘yes’ for those students at 8+ hours and ‘no’ for those <8). 1. Pick one numerical variable from the Math 211 Student Survey data set. Using the tools of Chapter 2, create an appropriate visualization of the variable in R Studio and fully describe the distribution. Did you find anything interesting or unexpected about this distribution? 2. Pick one categorical variable from the Math 211 Student Survey data set. Remember that you can always take a numerical variable and treat it as an ordinal categorical variable by dividing the range up into bins. Using the tools of Chapter 2, create an appropriate visualization of the variable in R Studio and fully describe the distribution. Did you find anything interesting or unexpected about this distribution? 3. Pick two variables from the Math 211 Student Survey data set: one categorical and one numerical, preferably two variables that you suspect might have some interesting relationship. Create a side-by-side boxplot in R Studio and discuss any interesting patterns you found. 4. Pick a categorical variable from the Math 211 Student Survey data set and treat the Math 211 students who responded to this survey as a random sample of Shoreline Community College students. Pose a question that could be answered using the tools from Chapter 6, and run through a full analysis of the inferences you can draw (including a hypothesis test, confidence interval, and a discussion of whether the relevant conditions are truly satisfied). 5. Pick a numerical variable from the Math 211 Student Survey data set and treat the Math 211 students who responded to this survey as a random sample of Shoreline Community College students. Pose a question that could be answered using the tools from Chapter 7, and run through a full analysis of the inferences you can draw (including a hypothesis test, confidence interval, and a discussion of whether the relevant conditions are truly satisfied). 6. Pick two numerical variables from the Math 211 Student Survey data set that you suspect have some interesting relationship. Create a linear regression model and fully analyze it. Other Questions 7. Take one HW or Quiz problem from this quarter that you struggled to understand and solve. Write down a full solution here, and then discuss how you got the problem to “click” and what you learned from the struggle. 8. What statistical ideas are you curious to learn more about after taking this class? Give an example of a question about the material you’d like to explore further and describe why this is an interesting question to you. 9. A friend of yours is not required to take Math 211 but is considering doing so. This friend asks you for one example of something you learned from the class that you found especially interesting or surprising. What would tell this friend? 10. Create and solve your own Final Exam question. Feel free to use a problem from the textbook as inspiration, but pick a context that is actually interesting to you. Math 211 Survey Variables This document gives some context around the variables in the Math211.csv dataset. credits How many credits are you taking this quarter? GPA What is your cumulative GPA at SCC? (0.0 -- 4.0 scale) GPA_exp What GPA do you expect in Math 211 this quarter? (0.0 -- 4.0 scale) study_hrs On average, how many hours do you study per week? study_hrs_211 On average, how many hours do you study specifically for Math 211 each week? sleep_hrs On average, how many hours per night do you sleep? meals_cooked On average, how many meals do you cook for yourself each week? meals_takeout On average, how many meals do you each takeout food each week? exer_hrs On average, how many hours per week do you spend exercising? music Do you play a musical instrument (Yes/No)? instruments List all instruments you play. This variable will require some data cleaning if you want to use it. Note that anyone who answered “No” to the previous question will have an NA for “not available” as their value for this variable. meditate Do you meditate?
