Introduction This applied reading assignment will be based on the studies presented in Hock, R. R. (2013). Forty Studies that Changed Psychology: Explorations into the History of Psychological Research. 7th ed. Pearson. You may either utilize the studies that I have selected for you or you may obtain a copy of the book and use any studies that you find interesting. Preselected studies can be found on D2L under Content --- Applied Reading The paper should be 4-5 pages double spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. As a reminder, this paper will be submitted through Turn It In, which will inform me of how similar your paper is to your fellow students, to other student papers, to information across the internet, and other published sources. It will be under my discretion to gauge if a particular degree of similarity is considered plagiarism. If so, you will be given a 0 for this assignment and will be subject to appropriate University disciplinary actions. Details of the Assignment 1. Please choose 3 studies that are of interest to you. This can be from my pre-selected list of studies or studies that you found on your own in the book. 2. For each study, please provide a brief (approximately 1 paragraph) summary of the study; i.e. explain the study to me as you would to a person who has never read the book. 3. Using the research slides from class/information in your textbook, please discuss the research methodology that the researchers used: a. What kind of research design did they use (i.e. experimentation; observational, etc) b. Did they have a control group? c. Does it seem like the sample was representative of the population that the researchers were trying to study (note: this may not be applicable for all of the studies, particularly with animals) d. What were the independent and dependent variables? e. Are there any potential problems that the researchers could have encountered in their data collection? (remember we talked about some designs having a lack of control, observer bias, ect) 4. Discuss how the results of these studies could be applicable to your everyday life. 5. For ONE of the studies, please find another research from within the past 5 years that tested the same concept (I.e. if you choose a study on classical conditioning from the book, you could find another study that explored classical conditioning). Explain the study to me as if I have never read it and discuss whether the results that those researchers found were similar to the study that you chose in the book. 6. When you are referring to our textbook, the applied reading book, or additional study you find, please ensure that you reference these materials appropriately to give the authors credit for their work and to distinguish it from your original ideas. The appropriate format for citations following the American Psychological Association can be found here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_style_introduction.html 7. Please DO NOT wait until the last minute to begin this assignment as this will likely impact the quality of your work. You may contact me during office hours or by appointment for any points that need clarification. Please note: Some of the studies may be based on materials that we have not yet covered in class but that are covered in the text. You are welcome to use these studies- just make sure that you read about the topic in the text. Deadline: As indicated on the syllabus, this assignment will be due on Thursday Nov 19th at 11:59 PM. Unless you speak with me beforehand, 2 points will be deducted from your paper for every day that it is late. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_style_introduction.html
