HSC 350 Biostatistics Project (Intersession) Purpose The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn how to use data in a scientifically appropriate way and communicate effectively with your intended audience. Part I: The Data Set and Research Question In the first part of the assignment, you will clean and set up your dataset in SPSS. This requires you to analyze the descriptive statistics for each variable, creating tables and figures. During this part, you will also create research question(s) to answer for the university. Part II: The Infographic (due at the end of week 1) An infographic is a way to present information in an easy-to-read format. It should use pictures to represent numbers and concepts, so it is easy for people of varying literacy levels to understand quickly. 1. For this project you will select 5 variables from the provided data set. At least one variable must be quantitative. 2. Try to select variables that are related so that you “tell a story” or begin to answer your research question with your descriptive statistics. 3. Conduct the proper descriptive statistics for the variables from what you learned in class; remembering that descriptive statistics for categorical and continuous variables are different. 4. Using an online infographic tool of your choice, you will develop a one or two page infographic displaying your data findings from your descriptive statistics. Never pay for an infographic if prompted by a website; just take a screenshot instead. Another example is below. · Give your infographic a title that explains the general topic. · Your infographic can be one or two pages · For categorical variables present either frequency or percentage. · For quantitative variables select the best measure of central tendency to describe the data. (You will go into a little more detail in your report regarding other descriptive statistics for quantitative variables). · Prioritize images and visualizations to communicate your findings based on your research question. Part III: The Report (due at the end of week 2) Your report will represent scientific and professional evidence of your ability to correctly analyze and interpret statistical information. In this part of the project, you will move from descriptive to inferential statistics. Your analyses will include one inferential test from group A and one from group B below, for a total of two analyses. · Group 1 : Independent t-test, ANOVA, Regression OR their nonparametric alternative · Group 2: Chi Square Tests of Independence, Pearson Correlation OR nonparametric alternative What to include in your report (APA format required): Make sure your paper is formatted in APA style. You must have a title page, abstract, body, and references list. If you are unsure about how to format a paper in APA style, check out this link from Purdue OWL (APA student paper, 7th ed). Introduction: The first paragraph should include a thesis statement that directly relates to your research question. It should provide an outline of what you are testing and why it is important. Why it is important should be derived from recent peer-reviewed papers. Using peer-reviewed literature provides credibility and a higher level of scholarship to your writing. Do not use the first related articles you find, search for ones that directly relate to your research question. Always use primary sources. Methodology: This section should describe what you did in enough detail for someone to repeat your study. (You do not need to describe what you did in SPSS). This section should have a summary paragraph discussing who the sample represents. Include information on the sample (who?), sample size (n), and any other pertinent information regarding research question, software and version, and survey methods (distribution, how? where?). Results: This section describes but does not interpret, what you found. It should just include the facts. Each variables’ results only needs to be about a paragraph long describing the data. Tables in Word and graphs from SPSS should accompany descriptive statistics and be referenced in the narrative. · For all variables, what is the level of measurement? Is it categorical or continuous/discrete? What are the response options for the survey question at hand? · For categorical variables, include BOTH frequency and percentage, for EACH level of the variable. · For quantitative variables, describe the best measure of central tendency, one measure of variability, and interpret the values of skewness and kurtosis. Include proper statistical notation when appropriate. After you describe your variables, you can interpret the findings from your inferential analyses. Tables and graphs should accompany your inferential analyses as well. Be sure to include your hypotheses, criteria (alpha), and the assumptions you test. Your interpretations should include BOTH your statistical decision and what the decision means in the context of variables used in the analysis. Tables included should be appropriate for the analysis: if you are comparing means, your table should include means and standard deviations in each group. Each variable should have a separate paragraph. All tables and figures must be referred to in the text. Provide all descriptive statistics in the table/figure and include only the most appropriate measure of central tendency in the text.
