1/4 2021 Spring Semester CIVL3402 Highway Engineering Course HIGHWAY PROJECT A second class provincial highway project having 2 lanes shall be designed according to the attached 1/2000 scale contour map. Project Traffic (Qp) : 500 vph Project Speed (Vp) [Min] : 70 kph Minimum Radius of Horizontal Curve (Rmin) : 150 m SPECIFICATIONS 1. Base Plan (Including “0” Polygon and plan study). SCALE 1/2000 EXPLANATIONS  The geometric standards should be specified (by the students’ own judgments) according to the data above.  “0” Polygon study must be approved by the teaching assistant(s)* before the plan drawing phase. 2. Profile and Vertical Curve (Calculations and Drawings on Graph (technical) Paper) SCALE 1/2000 (Horizontal) - 1/200 (Vertical) EXPLANATIONS  The grade elevations shall be calculated for the sections (points) between the two grade lines and shall be depicted to the profile.  For the case of a single grade line profile (no vertical curve), please contact teaching assistants. 3. Superelevation application plan, Relative profile of superelevation, Elevations of Points (Table) and 3 Cross sections (with area calculations) on graph paper. SCALE Super-elevation application plan: 1/500 (Horizontal) - 1/50 (Vertical) Relative profile of super-elevation: 1/500 (Horizontal) - 1/20 (Vertical) EXPLANATIONS  The superelevation shall be apply for only one of the horizontal curves (if more than one), WITHOUT TRANSITION CURVE.  Superelevation shall apply for the fixed centerline (rotate pavement about centerline).  “The elevation table” shall be prepared either for the points’ outside edges, centerlines and inside edges along the superelevation section, or the elevation points without superelevation application.  Cross sections shall be drawn and the areas shall be calculated for the largest fill and cut sections and for the point of bisection.  For the largest cut cross section a shoring and for the largest fill cross section a retaining wall shall be depicted. 4. Final Submission (Translucent paper or AutoCAD print-out) SUBMISSION DEADLINE 1st of June, 2022 23:59 2/4 GENERAL INFORMATION  Starting with the zero polygon approach and then proceed the profile as it is taught in the class would be highly beneficial. Adequate size (also amount) of graph paper, compasses and a ruler should be available for the preliminary route design.  Final drawings shall be submitted as an AutoCAD digital print-out (as .pdf file).  The final submission drawing sheets shall have the margin line of 10 mm from each side.  All submissions shall be hand-out as A4 size (for all documents, graph papers…etc) inside a folder, having the cover page on top.
