Global Citizen Assignment Overview The purpose of this research project is to give you an opportunity to apply statistical knowledge and techniques in addressing a research question. The Global Citizens Assignment makes up of 40% (400 points) of your course grade. For this project, you will work on “poverty” issue to (1) formulate a research question and hypotheses, (2) test the hypothesis with an appropriate statistical method (by using statistical packages, such as Excel and STATA), (3) interpret the results, and (4) generate a report of your results linking them with an UN Sustainable Development Goal. I will provide you with an example for each part. General Guidelines

• We will use Excel; however, you can use another statistical program (e.g., SPSS, STATA) as long as it provides comparable results.

• The assignment should be submitted via Canvas by its due date (May 1st, 5PM).

• The class dataset for the research project is located in the “Week 12 Module” folder and the “Group Project” folder on the “Files” tab in the course Canvas. • You will find relevant information on the sustainable development goal 1, “End Poverty,” from https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdg1. • For selecting variable of interest, refer to the links below. o https://www.welfareinfo.org/poverty-rate/ o http://www.fao.org/3/AC685E/ac685e08.htm • Anyone caught plagiarizing or cheating will receive a zero. Assignment Outline & Grading Rubric (400 points for total) • Part I: Introduction (100 points) o Write a brief summary of the issue of POVERTY in the context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/sdg1). o Set a research question and select your independent variable of interest among “Employment Rate”, “Senior Population”, and “Median Income” from the class dataset (see the second sheet, Poverty Project Data). o Explain the variable of your choice. o Conduct descriptive statistics. • Part II: Hypotheses (100 points) o Set a research hypothesis (with null and alternative hypotheses). o Draw any graphs or charts (e.g., scatterplot) that suggest potential relationships between the outcome variable and the additional variable and interpret them. • Part III: Interpretation and Results (100 points) o Conduct a hypothesis testing using correlation test and conduct regression analysis. o Attach statistical analysis outputs. o Interpret the results. • Part IV: Implications and conclusions (100 points) o Identify the poverty issue related to the UN Sustainable Development Goal and discuss its global and local significance. o Generate conclusions of your results linking them with the UN Sustainable Development Goal related to poverty issue. o Make recommendations. o Submit a full draft (combining all the parts).
