The primary aim of this study was to empirically explore the link between self-stigma and self-esteem of individuals with the presence of a mental illness, offering a novel perspective by exploring the same variables amongst a sample without a mental illness. It was intended that an exploratory comparison of both clinical and non-clinical populations would offer a more detailed perspective on the impact of self-stigma regarding mental illness. In addition to this, there were some further aims of the current study. Self-stigma has been negatively highlighted from previous studies in correlation with help-seeking in mental illness. The study furthermore aimed to observe the link between self-stigma and help-seeking from a therapist in regards to mental illness. According to Corrigan's (2004) study of self-stigma, concerns rose about an individual's loss of self-esteem if they elected to reach out for assistance from a therapist or other mental health professional. There was discovered (Voguel et al., 2006) that self-stigma is significantly different from other arguably similar constructs like self-esteem and public stigma, and that self-stigma anticipates perceptions toward seeking psychological help and tendency to seek counseling independently of previously observed factors like gender or perceived counseling risk. Primary research questions 1. What is the relationship between self-stigma and self-esteem amongst individuals with a presence of mental illness? Secondary research questions 2. What is the relationship between self-stigma and self-esteem based on gender, age, educational status, ethnicity, diagnosis and visiting a therapist in a sample with the presence of a mental illness? 3. What is the relationship between self-stigma and self-esteem amongst individuals with and without a presence of mental illness? 4. Does visiting a therapist relates to the relationship of self-stigma and self-esteem on both clinical and non-clinical population? 5. How much ethnicity relates to the relationship of self-stigma and self-esteem on both clinical and non-clinical population? 6. How much gender relates to the relationship of self-stigma and self-esteem on both clinical and non-clinical population? 7. How much educational level relates to the relationship of self-stigma and self-esteem on both clinical and non-clinical population?
